Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
One of the core aims of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is to develop psychological flexibility. This is achieved by acceptance of what is outside of our personal control and of the things that we cannot change while having a strong commitment to take action to live a rich and meaningful life. Through taking committed action in line with your values you can change your life to live a happier and healthier one!
ACT is an approach to behavioural change which encompasses mindfulness-based techniques from Eastern philosophy and researched based Western studies into behavioural psychology.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) utilises six core processes as its core basis for developing psychological flexibility and achieving behavioural change. This is achieved by people changing their relationship with their painful thoughts and feelings and become more open to them. Much of human suffering is caused by experiential avoidance; which is trying to avoid our troublesome thoughts and feelings, bodily sensations and painful memories. Our attempts at avoidance of our thoughts and feelings etc can work in the short term and have limited success but longer term can create much greater distress and suffering.
There has been many scientific studies into the effects of ACT and it's six core processes that has proven it to be an effective treatment for: depression, anxiety, stress, addictions, weight management, smoking cessation, alcohol related problems as well as being a useful tool to use when doing life coaching and improving self-confidence, self esteem and self value.

As a business we underwent a rebrand in 2010 changing our logo and corporate communication. Our industry holds a Triathlon in July at Dorney Lake and we felt this would be a great place to re-launch our branding to the competitors, service providers and the trade press. The only problem was that we need to find teams to participate in a mini triathlon and although we were very enthusiastic, we wern't the fittest bunch of people. Seeing the opportunity as a strong potential motivator to bring employees together, we hired John as a trainer and coach to make it easy for people to get fit. John trained us twice a week for all 3 sports-
running, swimming and cycling, making the hour session fun, accessible for all abilities and actually quite challenging for all levels. We entered 46 competitors and had a great company day out at the event.
John helped everyone participate, he held lectures at the beginning of the 8 weeks of training sessions to talk about the challenges of Triathlon, the week before to get us into the zone mentally and on the day he came to the event, warmed us up and supported us with hints, tips and lots of cheering. Employees asked for us to continue the training following the Triathlon.
Two years on (including another Triathlon with more participants) from then, John is still training employees at Arc once a week and as a business we believe it is a great employee benefit both in enabling people to get to know each other as well as keeping fit. Overall this is a good investment for our business and we ensure that our employees keep healthy and fit throughout the year. We have also strarted to use John for coaching some of our employees who have requested one to one sessions.
