Mindfulness in Schools Project-MiSP
I have delivered the Paws b programme to the Beacon School in Amersham, Bucks.
Paws b has been developed as an introduction to Mindfulness which is based and delivered in the classroom for 7-11 year olds.
It has been constructed of 6 individual topics each of which delivers different content related to Mindfulness. Each of the 6 topics can be delivered over 6 weeks in 1 hour sessions or alternatively over 12 weeks with 30 minute sessions.
The lessons have been very well created with an excellent power point accompaniment. This can enhance the children's understanding of mindfulness through diagrams of brain function which detail different parts of the brain engaged in learning, memory, choices, concentration and tuning into our body states (hungry, tired etc). This has been of great interest to some of the children that I have taught the lessons to.
The 6 lessons for the curriculum are:
Lesson 1: Our Amazing Brain, Let's Explore Our Amazing Brain
Lesson 2: Puppy Training, Learning To Be In The Present Moment
Lesson 3: Finding a Steady Place, Grounding Ourselves When We Wobble
Lesson 4: Dealing With Difficulty, Managing Your Amygdala
Lesson 5: The Storytelling Mind, Recognising The Power of Thoughts
Lesson 6: Growing Happiness, Choosing to Nuture Ourselves and Others
The lessons have been created with the main objective being for children to have a positive experience of Mindfulness. With the children gaining a sense of enjoyment from the lessons and of which hopefully many will use it as a daily practise to support them to be able to deal with their difficulties and grow their levels of happiness.
